.jpg) Consultation on Gender imbalance in corporate boards in the EU
the European Commission is considering a legislative initiative to improve the gender balance in the boards of companies listed on stock exchanges.
On the basis of the Progress Report "Women in economic decision-making in the EU" presented by Vice-President Viviane Reding on 5 March 2012, the Commission is launching a public consultation of stakeholders on possible measures in this context.
This consultation will feed into an assessment of possible EU-level measures to enhance female participation in economic decision-making, which will inform the Commission's decision on whether to propose action and on the form it should take.

.jpg) USTR RELEASES 2012 REPORT ON FOREIGN TRADE BARRIERS
On April 2, USTR released its 2012 Report on Foreign Trade Barriers. The report documents trade barriers that are still occurring globally and within the EU. Unless the barriers are based on EU law, the report differentiates between member states. With regard to the EU, the report refers to non-compliance with tariff regulations under the WTO Information Technology Agreement, Intellectual Property Rights, as well as the decade-long dispute about bananas.
The USTR report further includes a number of statistics. In 2011, the EU was the second largest export market for the U.S. Merchandise exports was $268.6 billion, increasing 12.1% from the previous year. The U.S. goods imported from the EU amounted to $367.8 billion, in contrast, 15.2% more than in 2010. The U.S. goods trade deficit with the EU was $99.2 billion in 2011, which is above the $19.6 billion in 2010. In addition, the USTR has published two reports on SPS trade barriers and technical barriers to trade. To see the report, click here.
