Alsace-Lorraine Regional Information
Geographically, Alsace-Lorraine regions occupy a central position in Europe bordering 4 different countries Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. Access to the region is convenient, with its international airports including Bâle-Mulhouse and Strasbourg. The regions are also within the proximity of international airports of Zurich, Frankfurt and Luxembourg. The regions also offer an exceptional transport and communications network that was recently enhanced by the launch of the TGV East high speed train link.
At the heart of this privileged European zone, Alsace-Loraine regions provide an attractive business environment. Its prime location is at the heart of the European dynamic and world’s biggest market. 50% of total European GDP, 200 million consumers, 6 European capital cities, and 10 major cities are all situated within a 600 kilometer radius around the regions.
The Alsace is in particular an innovative region. It is the 2nd leading region outside Ile-de-France in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, accounting for 5% of total patents registered. It also ranked among the top three regions for scientific publications. Alsace is also the 3rd leading region for the number of European patents resulting from private research.
The headquarters of the international “Therapeutic Innovations” cluster are located in Alsace. Two other national clusters are organized in collaboration with other French regions: the “Vehicle of the Future” cluster (automotive) and the “Great Eastern Natural Fibers” cluster (wood and paper). Other industrial excellence platforms include textiles, chemicals, materials, sustainable energy and energy efficiency (Energivie), plastics, agro-food, ITC, photonics (Rhenaphotonics) and imaging technology (Iconoval).
The Lorraine is the fourth leading region in terms of business creations, and the seventh leading region in terms of exports. Thanks to its rich and active economic environment, the region has approximately 80 000 companies and establishments, 25 000 artisans and employs a total of 72 440 people. The Lorraine also offers a high and diverse capacity for research and innovation which is supported by several clusters, including two officially registered clusters: the “Innovative materials and Intelligent products” cluster, and the “Fiber” cluster, which attract major development projects.
Given its proximity to nearby countries, a high percentage of the workforce in the regions are multilingual, and are considered by the business community to have an international reputation for efficiency and dedication to their work.
Alsace-Loraine regions are a prime investment location for international investors. Both regions have been ranked among the leading regions in France in terms of the number of jobs resulting from international investment inflows. With that said, within both regions together, more than one employee out of five works for an international company. The major investors in the regions originate from Germany, Switzerland and North America.
